How To Do A Spelling Sort

Watch this video to see Mrs. Jensen's class showing how to do a spelling sort.  Please have your student cut out the words in their homework packet and have them get them out and sort them every night.  Ideas for sorts are attached to the packet.  We have them store the words in a zip lock baggie.  That may work well at home, too!

Happy sorting!

Spelling

Hello! We trust you have had as great of a beginning of the school year as we have!  We have loved getting to know your students.

Students are bringing home the first spelling list of the year tonight.  Each night for homework, they must sort the words using the prompts in the homework packet.

However, if they would like an alternative, they may go online here and play a spelling game!  If you want to copy and paste the link in a separate window, here is the address:

www.spellingcity.com/thirdgradeperrine

When you get to that page, click on "week 1 spelling" and you can test them, play games, etc.  It's a fun way to learn spelling!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let us know!
We love teaching your children,

Dear Parents,

One of our first writing projects is to decorate our Writer’s Notebook.  The notebook is a very important part of our writing time together.  In the notebook, students will practice the many skills learned during Writer’s Workshop.  The notebook serves as an ongoing resource as your child becomes a writer.

During this first week of school, students are asked to decorate the cover of their Writer’s Notebook in the form of a collage, and return them to school no later than Thursday, August 28.  The notebook decorations should reflect your child’s interest.  The goal is to provide them daily inspiration for their writing.  Here is a list of possible items you might include on the notebook:

·         Photographs
·         Magazine clippings
·         Stickers
·         Scrapbooking items
·         Shapes and letters
·         Printed clipart
·         Construction paper
·         Illustrations and drawings

Please do not limit the items to these above, they are just provided to get you started. We want this to be a creative representation of your child.  Remember, these ideas should reflect your child’s interests, hobbies, family, favorites, etc.  Take the next step!  Share stories and memories and record a list of writing ideas to give your child a jump start.

After you have decorated this cover, please cover with clear contact paper or packing tape. This will ensure the notebook to last through the entire school year.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about the notebook project.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Sincerely,

The Third Grade Team
